I would think you can get rid of it, but I wouldn't swear to it. JC seems to be MIA right now so if you're feeling up to it I would try deleting it and then seeing if everything runs. I don't see a reason why it needs to exist anymore, the updater should be standalone (and I sure hope JC didn't hardcode directories in).
