How do i make the background of items invisible?

I'm trying to make my own tilesets and items, but the backgound of the items or tilesets always show as black without there being any colour there. How can i stop this? using paint.net btw

black transparent,
white transparent,
default transparent
 

theres 3 type of transparent in paint.net

after choose the background with this: http://prntscr.com/kehiw3

press delete and save your file if background still looks like black dont worry just try it ingame. i think it will be done.

Just make sure you have no background color on your image and save it as a .png file. I use paint.net so I know if you do as I said it’ll work.
