"Tiled" the 2d Map Editor

This is a really useful tool Ive found for making 2d maps. Many different engines support Tiled, but you'll have to check first before making maps with it. Still a great tool to have and useful for learning mapping.

An absolute ton of game engines have plugin to support tiles maps. It is very robust. It can export xml files of the map so really you can program anything to support it.
