How do i make the background of items invisible?

I'm trying to make my own tilesets and items, but the backgound of the items or tilesets always show as black without there being any colour there. How can i stop this? using paint.net btw

1 is the image in paint.net, 2 is the same image in the map editor panel, 3 is the chosen tile on the map in map editor, 4 is the tile in game.

Okay make sure you are placing the tiles on the mask layer. Since there is nothing connecting the edges of those tiles to the tiles next to them if you place them on the ground layer you're going to have a black border.
